Limited Edition

Although my final project was not anything I expected it to be, I am very happy with the way that it turned out. I decided to base the final off of the original wallpaper I created. The wallpaper was one of my favorite projects and I wanted to be able to make a smaller version that could be hung on a wall. Rather than keeping the same shape I decided to change it into zig-zags. I think that it would be interesting to have many different versions of this in different shapes.

Propaganda Book

For our propaganda project I decided to address the issue of racial inequality and racism. My book focuses on facial features and how although we may be of a different race we still have all the same features. When each section is flipped a new face is made using a combination of different photos. I was very satisfied with the way that this book was finished however I do wish that the binding stuck together better.

Final Project

For my final project I chose to combine different aspects of my other projects from this semester.  I used the flip-flops from my wallpaper project, the digital collage technique from my mixed media project, and the plant theme from my propaganda project to create flowers with flip-flops as petals.  The background image can be interpreted as either dirt to go with the flowers, or as sand to go with the flip-flops.

Propaganda Project

For my Propaganda Project, I decided to focus on the issue of literacy in children because it is still such a problem.  I chose to sculpt a tree because it symbolizes knowledge and wisdom.  To create a contrast between literacy and illiteracy, I created blank white leaves and green leaves with book titles on them.  This color difference was intended to show that will the ability to read you can live a full and rich life, while without it, life is blank and boring.

Change in Shift

The previous post denoted a shift in concept to include the Vitruvian man. I decided not to follow through with this concept, but working with it did offer me a lot of serious thought about how I look at assignments. My limited edition will be a edited photograph that I took of my niece. I wanted to create a piece that portrayed a personal benchmark of my own and advance my love for art. It may not be the most advanced or complex piece of work, but recently I have adopted photography as a great interest. It is more of a huge personal goal to have received my first DSLR, take a quality photograph, edit it, and print it out for others to view.  My artist statement will talk about the specific concept/goals that this piece represents. In brief, the combination of black and white, blur, and the subject matter are extremely intentional and represent a complex mix of themes.

Final Project - Brie Scolaro

Final Project - after progressing in my final project, my concept has shifted (for now) from a Disney "cute" themed project to a possible combination of a picture of my niece and the Vitruvian man. The concept behind this project would be to magnify the statement that "Everything in this world is beauty, whether it's old or new. Creation in general is beautiful" My concept may change, but for now I plan to work solely in the digital world despite my strength being in analog.

Women in America Mixed Media Project

Propaganda Inspirationn

Shepard Fairey is my favorite artist by far. He is best known for is OBEY campaign which is now a successful clothing line. His initial piece of work, a small intricate black and white version of an old boxers face, can be see in each of his works. Most of his works are for a cause, which I really like and will bring into my project. I wan't to add a mixed media vibe that builds on top of a single idea/concept and lets the viewer figure it out.

Reading 4

After reading this piece, I think I agree more with Einstein's point of view than Benjamin's.  I think that art allows us to see the world from a new perspective and to think more creatively as a result.  In terms of the reproduction of art, I think that it allows people who might not ever get the chance to travel and see an original piece in person, the chance to experience the work and ultimately derive meaning from it.  If art creates culture and perspective, then the reproduction of art is a good thing because it encourages change in society.

Mixed Media Project

Here's my mixed media project.  I used both digital and analog collage to illustrate clutter in advertising.  The man in my piece is Don Draper from Mad Men.

Propaganda Artist

The propaganda artist that I chose to research for this assignment is Barbara Kruger. I had known a little about her and was interested to learn more. Using found, collaged images and bold red and white type Kruger draws the viewer in with catchy slogans such as "I shop therefore I am." Many of Kruger's pieces deal with feminism and also the consumerism that takes place in our society.

Mixed Media Project 2

After finally applying the dirt, I was satisfied with my project. I wish that I would have been able to find a better way for the dirt to stay though. The lettering which was done by hand also could have been fixed in certain areas but overall I was happy with the way it turned out.

Reading 3: Propaganda

I learned a lot from this reading in terms of what propaganda actually is.  I have always thought of it in a negative way, but after reading this article I've realized it's just a method for communicating ideas through various media.  I'm looking forward to this next project, but I have no idea what I'm going to do yet.

Rikki's Project 2

I know we already had the crit for this project but I wanted to post the digital portion of my mixed media project.  I collaged lots of well-known company logos on Don Draper from Mad Men to illustrate the idea of clutter in advertising.

Cindy Couling

These works are done by Cindy Cooling. She keeps a visual journal, where she creates small mixed media compositions each day. Her works usually involved some photography integrated into a marker/pastel sort of vibe, with cut out words to make a statement. It reminds me of post secret, using a post card to convey your biggest secret. I'm definitely going to draw inspiration from this artist for my projects, using cut out images/photography meshed with pencil/pastel and cut out words.

This series is created by a mixed media artist named Nikki Farquharson.  In collaboration with photographer Brooke Nipar, she illustrated these pieces for New York's Missbehave Magazine.  She works primarily with pens and paper and her main interests are colors, patterns, shapes, typography, language, and communication.  I was drawn to these images because I liked how she combined the photographs with the illustrations (especially the model's hair) and I was drawn to her use of color and patterns within her entire body of work.

Mixed Media Artist

The artist I chose to look at is actually a collaborative project for several different RVCA ad's. The designer Erin acted as both the clothing designer and also the model. Photographer David Mushegain and Illustrator Alia Penner worked together to create the final ad's. I liked the use of color pencil with black and white photography. I think that it gave the advertisements more character and the style goes along with the clothing.

Chris Taylor and Craig Wood

Photo from grahambrown.com
Chris Taylor and Craig Wood produced this interactive wallpaper entitled "frames" to celebrate National Drawing week.  The concept allows viewers to customize the black and white frames however they choose by coloring them in.  Taylor and Wood have been working together since 2000.  Taylor is an artist, curator, and publisher.  Woods is an artist and lecturer who makes site-specific installations.

Belynda Sharples

photos from theartofwallpaper.com

Belynda Sharples created her first collection in 2005. This collection is made up of wallpapered designs that can be found amongst her sketchbook. Her influences came from her lifetime of drawing experience and every day occurences. Sharples took these drawings and turned them into different patterns that created a new feel to wallpaper with drawn line.

Florence Broadhurst

Florence Broadhurst established her revolutionary wallpaper business in 1959 and monopolized the Australian Market. She abandoned the constrictions of mass-production and became more liberal in her use of design and colors. She created hundreds of luxurious patterns and drew inspiration from nature and geometric shapes. By 1972, her collection included over 800 designs in 80 different colors.
